Crescent City residents value the high quality of life and excellent city services in our community. Important priorities include emergency response services, safe streets and sidewalks in our city and our community pool which provides safety and wellness services to our children, families, seniors and persons with disabilities.
Creating Sustainability For Our City
Despite being fiscally conservative, City resources have been stretched thin in order to cover the many needs of the community, including emergency response services, street maintenance, and operations at the Fred Endert Municipal Swimming Pool.
- To address the increase in emergency services calls experienced over the last five years, Measure S is funding two additional patrol officers, an additional K9, and three new fire captains to support our volunteers.
- Measure S funds supported the reopening of the Fred Endert Municipal Swimming Pool, current pool operations, replacement of equipment, and funding of a new heating system with dehumidification to create a better environment for patrons.
- Several streets projects have been completed or funded with Measure S funds, including street & sidewalk repair on Harding Ave, H street, and 9th street, pothole repairs along Front Street, and various other streets. Measure S is also funding to continue the reconstruction of Front Street which is set to begin in 2023.
Local Funding to Address Community Needs
Our City’s first priority is protecting the safety of our residents and maintaining a quality of life that we all value. In order to provide stable, local funding to meet these needs, in 2020 City Residents adopted Measure S. This one-cent sales tax now generates approximately $2 Million annually in locally controlled funding for essential city services including:
- Maintaining 911 emergency response times
- Repairing potholes, resurfacing city streets and installing and repairing sidewalks
- Increasing fire and police department staff, volunteer training and life-saving equipment to meet current needs
- Repairing and sustaining operation of community pool to provide health and safety services to youth, families, seniors and persons with disabilities
- Providing disaster and public health emergency preparedness
Strict Fiscal Accountability Requirements
Measure S would require strict fiscal accountability protections, including:
- Every penny from Measure S must stay in Crescent City – no funds can be taken away by Sacramento
- Measure S requires a Citizens’ Oversight Committee to ensure funds are spent for the intended purposes
- Measure S will be paid not just by residents but also those who visit and shop in Crescent City
- Groceries, prescription medicine and other essential purchases are exempt from sales tax
